Foodpanda makes Brazilian acquisition
Foodpanda, an online food delivery platform backed by Investment AB Kinnevik and Phenomen Ventures, has acquired Brazilian competitor MegaMenu.
Megamenu is based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and has 200 restaurants and 4,000 users registered on its platform. Foodpanda, which operates under the name hellofood in Brazil, completed another bolt-on in Brazil last week, with the acquisition of Jánamesa.
The company is now present in 28 countries.
Foodpanda also announced its launch in the Czech Republic, marking the firm's first foray into Eastern European markets. Users will be able to place orders on the firm's Czech site and access delivery services in the Prague area.
Further strategic rollouts are expected in the coming months.
Investment AB Kinnevik and Phenomen led a funding round in excess of $20m for Foodpanda in June 2013. The fresh capital was injected to fund the acquisitive growth of the firm on an international scale.
The company emerged out of Berlin-based incubator Rocket Internet and competes directly with DeliveryHero, backed by several VCs including Kite Ventures, and Just-Eat, supported by Vitruvian Partners.
