Electra appoints Neil Johnson as chair

Neil Johnson has been appointed non-executive chair and director of Electra Private Equity.
Johnson will take up his new role on 12 May. The appointment is part of a strategic redirection at Electra after activist investor Edward Bramson took a seat on the company's board in November 2015. Following his election, Roger Yates, who spearheaded the firm's criticism of Bramson and his investment vehicle Sherborne, stepped down as chair and resigned from the board. Kate Barker, who acted as interim chair while the replacement for Yates was found, will now resume her roles as senior independent director and chair of the remuneration and nomination committee.
Johnson is also non-executive chairman of polymers business Synthomer; e2v Technologies, a manufacturer of technology systems and components; and Motability Operations, which provides mobility solutions to disabled people. He is also senior independent director with Business Growth Fund (BGF).
Johnson was formerly a non-executive director of composite materials producer Umeco from 2009-2012 and of model and toy company Hornby from 1998-2013.
Electra's new director was educated in Cardiff and later at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. After his time in the army, he took on a series of senior roles within Lex Service Group, British Leyland, Jaguar and Land Rover. He currently sits on a ministry of defence advisory board, is a trustee of a number of charitable bodies and was, until 2012, an independent member of the metropolitan police authority.
