TDR Capital acquires pubs portfolio from Mitchells & Butlers
TDR Capital has acquired 333 managed pubs from UK operator Mitchells & Butlers, for an estimated £373m.
TDR has created the Stonegate Pub Company to operate the newly acquired portfolio. The private equity house foresees a significant reshaping of the UK pub industry in the coming years, and set up Stonegate Pub Company as a platform for future consolidation.
The deal marks the second divestment for Mitchells & Butlers in August, following the sale of Hollywood Bowl to AMF Bowling and CBPE Capital. According to the company's CEO, this disposal strategy will result in the sale of up to 15% of the group's estate. The proceeds will be used to shift focus to the eating-out market and away from strictly drinking establishments; they will also help to reduce Mitchells & Butlers' debt burden.
