Gimv acquires United Dutch Breweries
Gimv has acquired United Dutch Breweries (UDB) from previous owner Egeria alongside management.
The transaction marks Gimv's largest investment in the Netherlands to date, according to the GP. Gimv is focused on consumer-based investments with an enterprise value of up to €125m and an equity ticket of €3–30m.
Gimv stated it will support UDB's growth in Asia and Africa, and strengthen its brand portfolio.
Previous financing
Egeria acquired UDB in March 2011 from Nimbus Investments. The deal was estimated to be worth between €25–50m.
Nimbus had purchased UDB as part of a corporate carve-out in December 2007.
Company
Headquartered in Breda, UDB is an independent brewing group with brands including Oranjeboom, 3 Horses and Royal Dutch in its portfolio. It also sells non-alcoholic beers, stouts and dark beers.
The company can trace its roots back to 1968, when Allied Breweries merged Breda-based brewery De Drie Hoefijzers and De Oranjeboom, based in Rotterdam. UDB was carved out of Allied Breweries in 2008 and now outsources brewing to other breweries.
UDB generates annual turnover of around €77m, exporting its products to 100 countries. It sees sales divided roughly equally between Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, Africa and the rest of the world.
People
Floris van Oranje is country head of Gimv in the Netherlands, while Peter Maenhout is head of Gimv's Consumer 2020 platform. Stijn Deelen is CEO of UDB.
