Fondo Strategico makes maiden investments totalling €650m
State-backed investor Fondo Strategico Italiano has completed its first investments totalling €650m.
The investor has backed fibre optics network Metroweb with €500m and biopharmaceuticals firm Kedrion with €150m. Investment in aerospace company Avio is said to be imminent.
Fondo Strategico will generally acquire minority stakes in Italian companies intending to compete on a domestic and international scale. Co-investment will also be considered.
Key sectors for investment include defense, security, infrastructure, public services, transport, energy and high-tech. Portfolio companies will have an annual turnover of more than €240m and employ at least 200 members of staff.
Fondo Strategico currently manages funds of €4bn supplied by Cassa Depositi e Prestiti, an Italian bank 70% owned by the Ministry of Economy and Finance. The fund is ultimately aiming to raise €7bn by attracting additional commitments from domestic and international institutional investors.
Alessandro Mulas, a recent addition to the AIFI board, is the chief operating officer of Fondo Strategico. Giovanni Gorno Tempini is chairman.
