Cambridge Innovation Capital makes maiden investments
Cambridge Innovation Capital (CIC), an investor in high-growth technology companies in the Cambridge area, has completed its first three investments via the £50m Cambridge Cluster fund, backing Cambridge Imaging Systems, Origami Energy and Jukedeck with a total of £2.85m.
Cambrige Imaging Systems, a cloud-based video archiving company, has received £1.5m to bring its video content hosting technology to market.
Origami Energy, a grid-scale energy management developer, received £1.25m in growth capital as part of a £3.5m funding round. Octopus Investments and two angel investors also took part in the round.
Thirdly, CIC took part in a £500,000 seed funding round for University of Cambridge spinout Jukedeck – alongside Cambridge Enterprise and the University EIS Fund – investing £100,000.
The venture capital firm is a University of Cambridge-affiliated fund and aims to provide long-term, follow-on capital to companies originating in the city. CIC also states it will provide equitable financial structures to benefit all parties and will support angel investors to encourage retention of talent and valuable companies in the region.
Company
Founded in 1991, Cambridge Imaging Systems develops software for media archive management systems. It enables owners of video content to archive, deliver and bill for content and has been used by corporate and government clients including the Ministry of Defence, the BBC, ITN, British Pathé and British Telecom. It is also used by more than 60 universities and the British Library.
Origami Technology uses a software-as-a-service (SaaS) model to manage the flows of energy and capacity between physical sites, enabling renewable energy generators, storage providers and energy users to trade with each other at a micro-grid level.
Founded in 2013, Jukedeck develops software enabling users to generate their own original music for videos, online games and other applications. Every track is meant to be unique, removing issues of copyright and royalties.
