High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF) has invested approximately €500,000 in Aachen-based augmented reality technology company bitstars.
HTGF stated it intends to scale the business quickly, making new hires and growing the sales and marketing team.
It was attracted to the company because of its ease of use in a market that is growing through the increasing use of wearable technology, such as Google Glass. Previously, the creation of 3D content was only possible via customised software.
HTGF usually invests €500,000 in first-round funding, increasing to up to €2m in follow-on financing.
Company
Founded in 2012, bitstars is a spinout from the North Rhine Westphalian University of Technology (RWTH Aachen). The company developed a software-as-a-service platform to allow customers to create their own 3D content, which can be managed in devices such as smartphones, tablets and smart glasses.
Users can create either an extension of reality with virtual text and objects (augmented reality) or the creation of new virtual worlds (virtual reality). Generated content can be incorporated into multiple applications via the system, including apps for wearable technology such as Google Glass, as well as on smartphone apps and websites.
The 20-strong company claims customers in e-commerce, production, logistics and navigation among others will use the technology.
