Transplant raises €1.5m from Kereon et al.
Kereon Partners has led a €1.5m round for Spanish organ transportation specialist Transplant Biomedicals, with capital from Caixa Capital Risc and individual investors.
Aside from the institutional and private investors, Transplant received funds from the 2013-2016 edition of a Spanish state-backed Innovation investment scheme.
The capital will be dedicated to Transplant's core product, a device used for the transportation of thoracic and abdominal organs for transplants, yet to be launched commercially.
According to the business, the new technology could push down mortality rates among organ receivers as it represents a step-up from the current storage systems, based on conventional isothermal refrigeration.
Transplants are a key segment within healthcare in Spain, a country that leads the WHO transplant rankings and where more than one fifth of all requested organs are transported between regions.
Caixa Capital Risc financed its contribution via its €17m seed-focused Caixa Capital Micro II fund.
Company
Transplant Biomedicals was founded as a spinout in 2014 from Institut d'Investigacions Biomèdiques Agustí Pi i Sunyer, a research centre within Barcelona's Hospital Clinic. The company develops technologies used for the storage and transportation of human organs, tissues and cells, and operates in Barcelona, with headquarters in the Barcelona Nord technology park.
People
Ignasi Heras and Carmen Peralta co-founded Transplant Biomedicals and are the company's current CEO and CSO.
