MEP backs start-ups
UK MEP Peter Skinner from the Party of European Socialists has put forward a proposal to be discussed in the EU Parliament, that involves extending tax breaks to venture capital firms and aims to make it easier for companies to raise venture financing. The resolution, tabled on behalf of the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee, will acknowledge that some progress has been made in removing tax and bureaucratic burdens, while also stating that entrepreneurs continue to face particular difficulties in raising financial packages to start new businesses. As well as calling for venture capital companies to be given the same tax breaks as other businesses, Skinner also argues for generous treatment of stock option schemes for employees and for a more active approach by the European Investment Bank through the European Investment Fund. With the increasing rate of business failures, it is argued that the risks involved in starting businesses should be recognised through a favourable treatment of capital gains and a more tolerant attitude towards bankruptcy.
