Stibbe and Herbert Smith announce alliance
It has been announced that Herbert Smith, one of the largest UK law firms, will enter into an alliance with Stibbe, the top-three Dutch and Belgian law firm. Herbert Smith will gain access to a complement of lawyers in Northern Europe having already a signed formal agreement with German firm Gleiss Lutz Hootz Hirsch during 2000. Although the deal falls short of a merger, Richard Bond, senior partner at Herbert Smith, has indicated that a three-way merger between the firms certainly has not been ruled out. The three-way alliance, effective from January 1 2002, gives Herbert Smith a full-service operation in five European countries. The firm is already negotiating with potential alliance members in its principal remaining targets, Spain and Italy. Stibbe, which has offices in Amsterdam, Brussels, London and New York, has internationally oriented practice areas with a particular emphasis on mergers and acquisitions, banking and finance. In addition, the firm is specialised in securities, tax, corporate and structured finance, real estate, telecommunications, intellectual property law, environmental law, energy, administrative law, labour law, litigation and arbitration. The firm has approximately 350 lawyers, 89 of whom are partners.
