European venture capital firms raised E788.8m through four funds in the first quarter of 2005, according to VentureOne. This makes Q1 2005 the largest fundraising quarter since Q4 of 2004. It also represents more than half of the total amount raised by venture capital funds in Europe in 2004. With the European private equity markets traditionally six to nine months behind the US, VentureOne predicts that the level of fundraising recorded in the US last year may now be occurring in Europe. In the US, the first quarter of 2005 saw the total amount of venture capital raised fall slightly to $3.01bn. At the same time, according to a report by PricewaterhouseCoopers, the first quarter of 2005 saw first-time financings increase to 26% of all private equity funding.
