The Genetics Company AG

The Genetics Company AG raised SFr 25m in a series-C round in mid-February.Previous investors, Nextech Ventures and Novartis Venture Fund, the venture capitalarm of Novartis AG of Basel, were joined by new investor, Basel-based Varuma AG,as well as private investors. In late 2003, Nextech Venture and Novartis VentureFund co-led a SFr 14m series-B round of funding for The Genetics Company. Spanish investor Najeti Capital and German venture capital firmHeidelberg Innovation also invested in this round, which was made up of SFr 8.5min equity finance and an additional SFr 5.5m debt tranche, supplied to support theacquisition of CallistoGen AG and Abeta GmbH. In May 2003, the company alsoacquired the core business of German firm Abeta GmbH.

The Genetics Company focuses on drug and diagnostics discovery and developmentin the fields of cancer research and Alzheimer's disease, and benefits fromoutstanding commercial potential of its Alzheimer's therapeutic line. Current plansinclude a focus on intensifying the commercialisation of its Alzheimer's diagnosticskits. Headquartered in Schlieren, the company employs 28 staff. It was founded inZurich in May 1998 as a joint spin-off between the University of Zurich and theSwiss Institute for Experimental Cancer Research (ISREC).
