Aescap Ventures has taken a 25% stake in the Dutch medtech company i-Optics. The investors were impressed by the company’s patented technology, which is both broadly applicable and reduces costs dramatically.

i-Optics was founded in 2003, based on advanced optical technologies developed at Delft University of Technology. i-Optics’ eye diagnostics provide affordable and user-friendly retinal cameras. Key application of the retinal camera is screening for potentially blinding diseases like Diabetic RetinoPathy (DRP) and Macular Degeneration. The company’s lead camera product will be tested in the US in a comparative clinical trial involving 1000 patients. Two other innovative diagnostic cameras, one for the use on infants and the other for R&D purposes, are in late stage development.
People
Patrick Krol, partner at Aescap, has joined the company’s supervisory board as chairman. Michiel Mensink is the CEO of i-Optics.
