Carlyle acquires Turkish education provider
The Carlyle Group has acquired a 48% stake in Bahcesehir Koleji Education Group.
Yucel Group and Karatas Group, the existing shareholders, retained a stake in the company.
Equity was sourced from Carlyle MENA Partners, a $500m growth capital and buyout fund launched in March 2009.
The investment will be used to support the company's mission to provide high quality education in Turkey by acquiring new facilities.
The transaction was motivated by the growing unserviced demand in private education in Turkey.
Company
Bahcesehir Koleji is a provider of private nursery, primary and secondary school segments. In mid-2011, the company operated 20 primary schools and 11 secondary schools, with a total of 12,000 students.
Bahcesehir Koleji was founded in 1974 by Enver Yucel. Besides Bahcesehir Education Group, the company also owns Bahcesehir University and Ugur, a chain of test preparation centers.
People
Walid Musallam and Can Deldag led the deal on behalf of Carlyle MENA. Enver Yucel is chairman of Bahcesehir Koleji.
