Squire Patton Boggs bolsters German PE team with Linklaters hire
US-based law firm Squire Patton Boggs is bolstering its corporate practice in Germany with the hiring of private equity lawyer Sascha Konwalski.
The appointment of Konwalski, who joins from Linklaters and will be based in Frankfurt, is the eighth private equity-related senior appointment at the firm in Europe since summer 2021, according to a statement.
The team will use the new partner’s expertise to bolster efforts in Germany, where it anticipates further work to be generated. Previous expansions into Madrid, Milan, and Paris saw a rise in client demand and multiple business opportunities, according to the statement.
Jonathan Jones, the European managing partner, told Unquote that the firm is in discussions to open new offices in Europe, with announcements expected between now and December. One of these offices will have private equity and corporate focus.
The rationale behind the expansion is to create opportunities around continental Europe and beyond. With less competition for assets and more reasonable prices compared to the US and the UK, the region has attracted the interest of sponsors, Jones said.
Private equity firms expect lawyers to speak their language and "gone are the days of putting general corporate lawyers in front of the GP", he said.
Konwalski told Unquote he will be working alongside Fabio Borggreve, a partner in Frankfurt. Konwalski will use his local knowledge in his new role. There have been fewer transactions in the last few months as a result of macro-economic uncertainty, according to Konwalski, but he added that it will pick up.
Prior to his appointment, Konwalski was at Linklaters since 2004. According to the statement, his experience includes advising on cross-border private equity transactions in Germany and the UK, advising PE funds and portfolio companies as well as German investors on transactions.
