Quantum buys train maintenance firm Bahnwerk Eberswalde
Munich-based Quantum Capital Partners has acquired rail vehicle maintenance company Bahnwerk Eberswalde from Deutsche Bahn (DB) in a turnaround deal.
Quantum agreed to buy the maintenance centre from Deutsche Bahn, Germany's largest railway company, for a symbolic €1, after it announced plans to close the site in 2015 due to deteriorating orders. The sale was made possible by a guarantee from federal state Brandenburg.
The investor agreed to save 210 of the 320 jobs. It also agreed to keep the site running for at least another five years.
Quantum hopes to find new customers for the site that do not belong to Eberswalde's previous owner DB. The investor acquired DB's train wagon construction site in Niesky in 2014, after a decline in orders. It hopes that customers buying wagons in Niesky will use Eberswalde's maintenance service in the future.
The deal is expected to close in January 2017.
Company
Founded in 1878, Bahnwerk Eberswalde is a maintenance site for train wagons. The company's staffing numbers decreased from 500 in 2012 to 320 in 2016.
