Stibbe splits following talks with Latham
According to press reports, the law firm Stibbe, which has operations in Amsterdam, Paris, Brussels, London and New York, is splitting, after the Paris office began merger talks with US firm Latham & Watkins. It is said to have begun discussions because of a desire to be able to compete more effectively for business with global firms. However, the US firm was only interested in forging links with teams in France, Germany, and the UK. Previously, Stibbe had also held talks with Lovells, but the pace of international expansion appears to have been too slow for some, with the departure of several partners from the Stibbe team in Paris over the past few months. Amongst them were Olivier Edwards and Jean-Marc Franceschi, who are now at Jones Day Reavis & Pogue. Edwards has advised on a range of private equity deals, such as Sharing Technologies, Freever, High Deal, Celtipharm and Exlinea.
