European private equity awards summit
The European Private Equity Awards Summit hosted by EVCA, INSEAD and Real Deals took place in Paris on 24 November 2004. Cavendish Corporate Finance was judged European private equity boutique of the year. Permira's Philip Bassett collected the fund of the year trophy for its third European fund, which closed last September at E5.1bn. It attracted 77 new investors, and involved an ancillary product to include smaller investors. Runners-up were Nordwind Capital and Terra Firma Capital Partners. Advising 30 buyouts in the past 12 months, SJ Berwin won the law firm of the year award. Enterprise Investors picked up the growth capital deal award for its investment in Polish drug producer Polfa Kutno, which it took private in 1995. The venture capital deal of the year was won by Banexi Ventures Partners, for selling Kelkoo to Yahoo for E470m. PPM Ventures won the mid-market buyout of the year award, after its investment in UK retailer Oasis, which it took private in 2001 for £54m. Its subsequent sale to Baugur in November 2003 generated an 89% return for PPM. Barclays Capital won the bank of the year award, reflecting its growing role in the sector of debt provision, which has played a more prominent role than usual in private equity this year. Runners-up were Credit Suisse First Boston and the Royal Bank of Scotland.
