US-headquartered private equity firm Oaktree Capital Management has acquired French professional football club Stade Malherbe Caen (SMC).
The GP bought the business alongside French entrepreneur Pierre-Antoine Capton, who invested via his Pac Invest holding company.
Oaktree acquired a stake of around 80% and Capton bought the remainder. The total investment amounted to around €20m, according to press reports.
Following the deal, former French footballer and manager Olivier Pickeu was appointed as executive chair, while Pierre-Antoine Capton became chair of the company's board.
The GP is currently investing via Oaktree European Principal Fund V, which was launched at the beginning of 2020.
Company
SMC is a professional football club playing in the city of Caen in Normandy. It was established in 1913 by the merger of Club Malherbe Caennais and Club Sportif Caennais. The team takes its name from François de Malherbe, a 17th century poet from Caen.
The club played in Ligue 1 for several years and reached the Coupe de la Ligue final in 2005. It was relegated to Ligue 2 in 2019, after finishing 19th in the previous Ligue 1 season.
The team played in the Stade de Venoix until 1993, when a new 21,500-capacity stadium was built, named Stade Michel d'Ornano.
