Seventure injects further €1m into MaaT
Seventure Partners has led a €1m round for French microbiome specialist MaaT Pharma.
Seventure, which helped found Maat in August 2013, had already backed a first €1m round for thecompany in January 2015. The early-stage investment was financed via the VC's Health for Life Capital fund, which held a €100m second close in March 2015.
At the time, it was revealed a further €1m would be deployed in the business, provided a number of scientific milestones were reached.
Since then, MaaT has focused on carrying out pre-clinical tests alongside the French National Institute for Agricultural Research, a shareholder in the business since January. According to MaaT, progress was made towards the development of a standardised therapy, with key findings in fields such as microbiota conservation.
This second €1m round will assist MaaT as it gears up for the clinical phase, expected for 2016. The business expects additional fundraising will be needed towards that goal.
Seventure, which bolstered its investment committee with the hires of Danilo Casadei Massari and Thomas Werner in June, announced in the same month that its portfolio company Biophytis was looking to raise €19.9m in its upcoming listing on Alternext.
Company
Lyon-headquartered MaaT was co-founded in 2014 by Seventure and Hervé Affagard, Pierre Belichard, Joël Doré and Pierre Rimbaud. The company develops therapies targeting dysbiotic enteropathies, which are microbial imbalances caused by medical treatments. Its current flagship product uses autologous intestinal microbiota transplants for the treatment of gastrointestinal side-effects.
