Guy Hands buys Nordic operations of McDonald's
Terra Firma founder and chair Guy Hands has acquired the Nordic operations of McDonald's, becoming a strategic partner and franchise licence holder of the global fast food chain.
The transaction was financed by Hands without involvement of Terra Firma's buyout fund and will see him take over operations of the 435 McDonald's outlets across Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland. Around 95% of the restaurants are franchised.
According to local media reports, McDonald's engaged Nordic corporate finance house Carnegie to lead the disposal of the group in December 2016. Nordic pensions were rumoured as potential buyers, as were private equity firms. At the time, a price tag of around DKK 3bn was reported, though the final price of Hands' acquisition has not been disclosed.
The deal is expected to close by the end of Q1 2017.
