3i takes Scandlines competition complaint to EU level
3i has lodged a complaint with the EU competition authority to protect portfolio company Scandlines, a ferry operator, against unfair competition from a proposed tunnel linking Denmark and Germany.
The GP argues that subsidies from the Danish government for a proposed fixed link under the Fehmarn belt between Denmark and Germany are illegal and will give the link an unfair advantage over Scandlines' ferry service, which is currently the only direct route across the Fehmarn belt.
In its complaint, 3i said the Danish government acted wrongly when it sold Scandlines to 3i and Allianz in 2007 for DKK 11.6bn, when it had plans to subsidise a competing company in the future.
Scheduled for completion in 2021, a Fehmarn link could make a sale of Scandlines much more difficult for 3i, which bought out Allianz's stake in late 2013, as a strongly subsidised competitor may be able to undercut the ferry link's prices.
This complaint is the second to be lodged on the matter, as Scandlines itself has previously lodged a similar objection with the European competition authorities.
