Inventure et al. in $3.4m series-A for Umbra
Finnish video game graphics software specialist Umbra has held a $3.4m series-A, receiving funds from VCs Inventure, Lifeline Ventures, Initial Capital and a number of business angels.
The institutional round, the first raised by Umbra since its foundation in 2006, will be invested in the 3D streaming and rendering technologies the company provides to video game developers.
The software, already operational via a functional prototype, improves the performance of 3D graphics in video games by working only with the content visible to the gamer. The technology can also be used for the virtual, 3D reconstruction of real-life buildings and environments, which requires higher data-processing rates than those available at present.
Umbra's first three institutional backers are all early-stage investors. Inventure and Lifeline Venture are Umbra's compatriots, having backed dozens of startups in the Nordic countries and abroad from their Helsinki base.
Meanwhile, Initial Capital works out of its London and Silicon Valley offices and recently led a $1.9m funding round for Amsterdam-headquartered stock trading app BUX.
Company
Created in 2006, Umbra develops software improving graphic performance in video games. During its existence, the company claims to have worked on more than 100 titles; the list includes Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Batman Arkham Knight and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Headquartered in Helsinki, the company runs technical support via additional offices in Seattle and is also present in Shanghai, Seoul and Tokyo.
People
Otso Mäkinen is Umbra's current CEO.
