Genoa football club to be sold to York Capital
US-based private equity firm York Capital Management has signed a memorandum with president and majority shareholder Enrico Preziosi for the acquisition of Genoa football club, according to Italian newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore.
Genoa appointed Assietta as adviser for the sale in May. According to press reports, Preziosi is expected to sell the company for around €130-140m.
Established in 1893, Genoa is the oldest active football club in Italy. The club's trophies include nine Serie A league titles – the last one won in 1924 - six Serie B league titles and one Coppa Italia. Genoa's home stadium is Stadio Luigi Ferraris, which is the oldest in Italy and has 36,599 seats. The company reported revenues of €124.8m, EBITDA of €31.1m and net loss of €3.9m in 2018.
Genoa is not the first football club to attract the interest of York Capital. According to press reports, a consortium of investors led by former Italian football player Gianluca Vialli alongside York Capital and Pamplona Capital made an offer to acquire Sampdoria in March. Later in the year, the firm was in talks for the acquisition of a stake in Palermo football club, according to market rumours.
York Capital was founded in 1991 by American entrepreneur Jamie Dinan, who also owns a minority stake in NBA team Milwaukee Bucks. The firm is headquartered in New York City, with additional offices in London and Hong Kong, and has $20.5bn in assets under management.
