Sarkozy meets with Spanish bankers for private equity fund
Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy has met with Spanish bankers ahead of the launch of a €1bn private equity fund, according to reports in the local press.
Sarkozy is reported to be looking to recruit three or four Spanish professionals to kick off dealflow in the country in the second half of the year. Real estate and corporate loans are thought to feature in the proposed fund strategy.
The Qatar Investment Authority is the proposed cornerstone investor in the fund, having reportedly offered to commit €250m. It is thought that the vehicle will focus on companies in continental Europe with a particular emphasis on Spain.
In January, Sarkozy's entourage dismissed claims that he was looking to launch a fund, which would be based in London in order to take advantage of a more attractive tax regime.
