Venture Capitalists sweat it out for charity
A group of 30 people, including a number of venture capitalists from seven countries, are currently preparing to tackle the wilds of Vietnam on an eight-day sponsored bike ride and trek beginning 20 January 2002. The trip, organised by Doug Miller of International Private Equity Limited, is unusual in that all participants are paying their own costs, including their flights, and have the opportunity to choose their own charities to support. 25% of all proceeds will go to the Mines Advisory Group (MAG), a Manchester-based charity focusing on landmine clearance in northern Iraq, Angola, Bosnia, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. Other charities chosen by the participants include Intermediate Technology (a development aid charity), cancer and other health-related charities, Oxfam, Doctor without Borders and the Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice. Participants joining the adventure come from firms including: Pond Ventures, Barclays Private Equity, Adams Street, Helix, Halder, Prudential, Italian Equity Partners, Vertex, Pantheon and SJ Berwin. The group hopes to raise in excess of EUR 200,000 and would welcome any further sponsorship. Doug Miller has found an anonymous donor who will match up to EUR 50,000 given by readers to the mines advisory group - so dig deep into your pockets! For further information, or to sponsor these intrepid explorers, please contact Doug Miller at IPELmiller@aol.com or the Mines Advisory Group at steve.crump@mag.org.uk or www.mag.org.uk.
