Southampton University launches Centre for Enterprise & Innovation
The University of Southampton has announced the formal launch of its Centre for Enterprise & Innovation (CEI) as part of its Golden Jubilee celebrations. The opening of the centre will highlight the university’s track record in spinning out commercial enterprises from research and development work taking place within the university. A series of events and seminars will be held as part of the celebrations, including Investors’ Day, Undergraduates’ Day, University day and Business Partnering Day as well the launch of an entrepreneurs’ club to be run jointly by CEI and the university ‘s school of management. Investors’ Day will be used to showcase the university’s scientific and technological research to investment companies for the purpose of attracting venture capital backing. In the course of the Investor’s Day, attention will be focused in particular on the kind of research that led to the formation of Southampton Photonics, which secured £55m in first-round funding in 2000, based on the strength of developments in the optoelectronics research centre. As reported in the last issue of …unquote†CEI has already formed a partnership with IP2IPO, the incubator fund majority-owned by Beeson Gregory (22 April 2002, page 25).
