UK rated best in Europe for mid-market investment
A new report by the BVCA and AltAssets which surveyed the views of the UK's leading private equity firms and institutional investors has drawn some positive conclusions about the health of the UK mid-market. 'Understanding the UK Mid-Market' has revealed that 80% of LPs believe the quality of UK mid-market firms is superior to counterparts in Continental Europe. According to the findings, the factors which make the UK the best environment in Europe for mid-market investment are quality of dealflow, good exit environment, solid returns, experienced teams and the overall positive climate for private equity in the region. The report also highlighted, however, the fact that the gap between the UK and Europe has diminished over the past few years. The UK currently has the highest ratio of completed deals to buyouts, but other European countries are fast gaining ground on this statistic. The BVCA is advocating that the government maintain its supportive stance towards the UK private equity industry in order to enable it to fight increasing competition from Europe in the mid-market sector.
