Border to Coast bolsters alternatives expertise with new hire
Border to Coast Pensions Partnership (BCPP) has appointed James Thelwell for the newly created role of portfolio manager for alternative investments, including private equity, private credit, and infrastructure.
Thelwell will report to Ian Sandiford, senior portfolio manager for alternative investments. Prior to joining BCPP, he spent around five years at Greater Manchester Pension Fund as investment officer and investment manager.
Thelwell's appointment comes as BCPP is looking to expand its internal investment capabilities, according to a BCPP spokesperson.
BCPP is one of the eight partnerships between 89 local government pension schemes (LGPS) in England and Wales that invest collectively to take advantage of economies of scale.
The organisation launched a private markets investment programme in 2019 that is expected to grow to more than £5bn over the next three to five years.
The organisation announced its initial private equity offering in November 2019, only a few months after establishing a legal structure enabling the pension partnership to invest in private markets on behalf of its partner pension funds.
BCPP secured £500m in commitments as part of its first private equity mandate, from eight out of its 12 partner funds. It has notably invested an undisclosed ticket in Palatine Private Equity Fund IV, $60m in Baring Asia Private Equity Fund VII, and $40m in GreatPoint Innovation Fund II.
The organisation targets global exposure in private equity across North America, Europe and Asia, and is interested in investing in buyouts, special situations, growth and venture strategies.
