Shearman & Sterling hires funds partner in London
New York-headquartered law firm Shearman & Sterling has appointed Phil Baynes as a funds partner in London; he joins from Weil, Gotshal & Manges.
Baynes has experience in advising investment fund managers on the marketing, structuring, fundraising and operation of a wide range of private investment vehicles, including private equity, infrastructure, debt funds and real estate, as well as co-investment schemes, secondary transactions and carried-interest arrangements, according to a press release.
Baynes' appointment reflects the firm's ambitions to expand core practice areas in key geographies including Europe and London, according the press release. He will work alongside John Adams, a partner in the investment funds team, to grow the London operation, according to the press release.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Baynes spent three years at Weil and prior to this was at Traver Smith's investment team for over seven years. Previously he was an associate at Russell Investments assisting on general funds work, having started his career with DLA Phillips Fox working in the managed funds and superannuation team. Shearman & Sterling has made another 30 lateral hires globally since January 2021 to continue expanding in core areas, according to the press release.
