US investor circles Topshop
Sir Philip Green, the owner of British clothing retailer Topshop, is reportedly in talks with US-based private equity house Leonard Green & Partners LP for the sale of a 25% stake in the business.
According the Financial Times, a deal could be struck as early as later this week. Media reports value the chain, which is part of Green's Arcadia group, at around £1bn. Green bought the Arcadia group in 2002 for an estimated £840m.
Leonard Green is a private equity house based in Los Angeles, California. It usually targets businesses valued in the $500m-$2bn range. The firm is notably invested in US-based retailer J Crew.
Arcadia employs 43,000 staff. It generated total sales of £2.68bn and pre-tax profit of £166.9m in the 2011-2012 fiscal year. Although figures specific to Topshop were not released, it is understood to be one of Arcadia's most profitable businesses.
