VC-backed Supercell acquires Space Ape Games

Supercell, a Finnish videogames developer backed by several VC firms, has acquired fellow UK-based developer Space Ape Games.

Supercell acquired 62% of Space Ape at a total equity value of $90m. The target's founders and management will continue to hold the remainder of the equity.

Northzone led a $7m series-C round for Space Ape in 2015. Existing backers Accel Partners, Initial Capital and Connect Ventures also took part in the round.

Supercell has meanwhile attracted significant amounts of venture funding in recent years. Atomico, Index Ventures and Institutional Venture Partners (IVP) notably invested in a $130m funding round for the Finnish mobile games developer in 2013. The round valued Supercell at $770m. Atomico invested more than $25m in the round, alongside Index, which is believed to have invested $52.5m, leaving an equal amount ($52.5m) with IVP.

The business also received a $12m financing from Accel, London Venture Partners and Klaas Kersting in 2011, and previous funding from London Venture Partners, Initial Capital, Cerval Investments and Lifeline Venture.

Company
Headquartered in London and founded in 2012, Space Ape is a mobile gaming company. It employs 100 people and has launched three games to date: Samurai Siege, Rival Kingdoms, and Transformers: Earth Wars.

Supercell is a mobile games developer based in Helsinki and San Francisco. The company grew rapidly since its inception in 2010 and has notably developed hit game Clash of Clans.
