GFH Capital acquires Leeds United
Dubai-based GFH Capital has acquired Leeds City Holdings, the parent company of Leeds United Football Club.
GFH Capital is a subsidiary of Islamic investment bank Gulf Finance House.
Company
Founded in 1919 and based in Leeds, Leeds United Football Club is an English football club currently playing in the Championship league. In 2005, businessman and previous owner of Chelsea FC Ken Bates bought a 50% stake in Leeds United, which was sinking under a large debt burden.
The company went into voluntary administration in 2007 and appointed KPMG Restructuring as administrators. A number of bids were made for the club and the majority of creditors voted in favour of the offer made by a consortium led by Ken Bates, which was accepted by the administrators and saw the club sold for £1.5m.
