Chimera backs Fuel3D with £4m
Venture capital firm Chimera Partners has injected £4m into 3D scanner developer Fuel3D.
Fuel3D plans to launch its consumer scanner in 2015. The funding will also be used for production, customer support and international distribution. The company will then look to expand into related markets such as biometrics and eyewear.
According to Fuel3D's CEO, the funding will additionally allow the company to make new hires and expand its US operations.
Previous funding
Fuel3D raised $300,000 through a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign in 2013. This was followed up by £1.6m in a series-A funding in February this year from Chimera.
Company
Originally created at Oxford University, Fuel3D develops advanced 3D scanning systems. The company now has distributors in 23 countries worldwide, while its manufacturing operations are located in Asia. It has seven employees at its Oxford headquarters.
Its handheld 3D scanner delivers high-resolution shape and colour capture for various 3D applications, such as 3D printing, art, animation and game development. It combines stereo cameras with photometric imaging to capture and process 3D models.
