South Africa congress looks ahead

unquote’s 4th annual South Africa Private Equity Congress kicks off in two weeks’ time, and will see many of Africa’s biggest investors come together to discuss the issues facing this up-and-coming market.
J-P Fourie, CEO of the South African Private Equity and Venture Capital Association says 2011, and what it holds for the South African private equity industry, will be a major discussion point at this year's conference.
Last year saw strong growth in South African M&A activity, although private equity deal doing decreased for a third consecutive year, according to SAVCA. Nonetheless, market players are hopeful that market activity will return to a stable footing and have no desire to see the unsustainable levels of investment witnessed during 2007 again.
This year's congress will of course look ahead at what 2011 might bring for the industry, but will also look back and consider recent events in the market.
Keynote speaker Professor Mthuli Ncube, chief economist and vice president of the African Development Bank, will look at the impact the global financial crisis had on South Africa's private equity market. He will also give his views on the challenges and opportunities that the industry will face in the coming year. The conference will further feature a pan-African stream looking among others at the important issue of risk management in the African market.
Following a wide range of panel discussions on various aspects of South African private equity, the day will be rounded off with an international local LP roundtable, featuring John Gripton from Capital Dynamics, Roderick Evison of CDC Group, and Swiss Re Private Equity Parners' Robert Nef. The session, which will look at South Africa in comparison to other markets and the key elements which are likely to attract LPs to the country, will be chaired by Emile du Toit, Divisional Executive: Investment Banking at DBSA.
Domestic institutional investors are also invited to attend the LP Masterclass the following day.
The unquote" South Africa Private Equity Congress will be held on 10 February 2011 in Cape Town. Full details of the event can be found here.
