Private equity boosts returns for Ohio pension fund
School Employees Retirement System of Ohio (SERS), the US $14.3bn pension fund, has generated a 19.84% return from its private equity programme for the fiscal year to 30 June 2018.
Private equity has been the highest performing asset class for a swathe of institutional investors reporting results over the past few weeks; notably, SERS was ranked second on the American Investment Council's (AIC) list of top pension funds with the highest private equity returns over a 10-year period, behind Massachusetts Pension Reserves Investment Trust.
The public pension scheme generated a net return of 9.17% from its entire portfolio for the same period, beating its benchmark by 0.09%.
US equities (14.76%) and opportunistic investments (11.62%) also outperformed other asset classes.
The scheme committed around $60m to Bridgepoint Europe VI in 2017. Other recent commitments include $50m to Bluebay Direct Lending Fund III and $50m to Silver Lake Partners V.
SERS also scores highly in embracing ESG criteria. The pension scheme has not only incorporated ESG analysis into its investment process, but it has also included several questions about ESG into requests for proposals when searching for new managers.
The pension scheme has joined forces with Midwest Investors Diversity Initiative and Investors for Opioid Accountability, in a bid to promote governance reforms at public companies associated with the opioid crisis, and to push for diversity on corporate boards.
