
PE drives returns for Maryland pension fund
Maryland State Retirement & Pension System, the $51.9bn pension fund, generated 8.06% returns from its entire portfolio, beating its 7.50% assumed actuarial return rate, for the year to June 2018.
Private equity has been the best performing asset class for the same period, delivering 19.64%. Private equity has generated better returns compared to the previous year, when it delivered 16.4%.
"The System's returns were supported by strong results in both public and private markets," said Andrew Palmer, chief investment officer.
The public pension fund has also increased its allocation to private equity to 12.5% as of June 2018, from 10.3% the year before.
Maryland State Retirement & Pension System has recently committed $118m to Bridgepoint Europe VI. Other commitments include Landmark Equity Partners XVI, Blue Wolf Capital Fund IV and Bain Capital Fund XII.
