League table of placement agents: a clarification
It has been brought to our attention that a piece of email-based marketing issued recently by a European fund advisory business has caused some confusion in the market.
According to the mail-shot, their published ranking was derived from the "Unquote European Advisory league table, released in August 2018". It pertains to a ranking of placement agents in the European private equity fund market stretching back to 2001.
We would like to clarify that Unquote has published no such league table or report. While the data highlighted in the marketing piece is indeed based on searches made on the Unquote Data platform, it was run and published without our involvement.
Unquote has not historically published regular league tables of fund advisory businesses. It is our view that the nature of the fundraising market makes it difficult to do so with a high degree of accuracy: specifically, we are aware that a significant number of GPs raise funds with the assistance of in-house advisory teams at the larger investment banks, and these arrangements are often limited to certain geographies and are not widely publicised. Furthermore, on the occasions that we do include league tables in proprietary reports, they would be limited to a much shorter timeframe that would better reflect recent activity levels.
Furthermore, this functionality was recently added to the Unquote database and our research team is still in the process of gathering historical data to ensure the results accurately reflect the market. As such, any league table would be likely to change significantly in the coming weeks and months.
We endeavour to accurately reflect activity for market participants, and always welcome the help of our audience to do so. If you notice that activity levels for your firm are not as accurate as they could be, please reach out and we will be in touch to investigate.
