Calpers seeks investment consultants
California Public Employees Retirement System (Calpers), the $353bn pension scheme, has issued a tender notice searching for a private equity investment board consultant and a general pension board consultant.
The pension fund currently employs Meketa Investment Group and Wilshire Associates Incorporated for its private equity and general pension portfolios respectively. However, both contracts expire in June 2020.
The new contract is expected to start in July 2020. It would be three years long, with the option to be extended for up to two more years.
The private equity consultant would be in charge of asset-specific consulting services, including research and analysis, asset allocation, risk management, performance, external manager reviews and investment training.
The general pension investment consultant's responsibilities also include investment policy review, general investment consulting, and ongoing training.
The required qualifications for the private equity consultant include a minimum of three years of experience, providing private equity consulting services to public pension funds with assets under management (AUM) of at least $10bn.
Interested firms for the general consultant role should also have a minimum of three years of experience providing consulting services to public pension funds with AUM of at least $25bn.
The deadline for proposals is 30 April 2019. Finalists' interviews are expected to take place in August 2019.
Recent commitments to private equity include Permira Growth Opportunities I, Vista Equity Partners Fund VII, Carlyle Europe Partners V and The Triton Fund V.
