Carlyle raises USD 18.2bn in H1 2021
Carlyle has raised USD 18.2bn this year across all business lines, principally driven by its real estate and credit strategies, according to its latest quarterly results.
The figure is a 47% increase on the amounts of fundraising recorded over a similar period last year. Fundraising amounted to USD 10.4bn in Q2 2021 alone, driven by the first close of Carlyle's ninth US real estate fund, strong CLO origination activity in global credit, and fund closings for multiple separately managed accounts across its global credit and AlpInvest strategies.
Meanwhile, fundraising for the firm's corporate private equity activity was more muted, standing at USD 500m in Q2 and USD 1bn YTD.
The firm now has dry powder totalling USD 77bn, up from USD 75bn in Q1.
Total assets under management (AUM) rose to a record USD 276bn as of 30 June, increasing 6% from the prior quarter and 12% YTD. The quarterly increase was largely attributable to "strong appreciation" across the carry fund portfolio as well as the aforementioned fundraising activity, Carlyle said. Of its AUM, corporate private equity accounts for USD 101bn.
Carlyle's corporate PE funds have appreciated by 28% YTD, and 12% in Q2 2021 alone, the results show.
