TURKEY - Carlyle takes 40% stake in Medical Park
US buyout firm Carlyle has taken a 40% stake in healthcare services company Medical Park Saglik Hizmetleri AS in an all-equity deal.
Founded in 2005, Medical Park originally operated two hospitals based in Istanbul that have existed since the mid-1990s. The company has increased this figure to 13, equating to some 2,000 beds, via the development of new hospital projects in leading cities in Western Turkey, as well as through the acquisition of single hospitals based in North and East Anatolia.
The company now offers a diverse range of healthcare services employing 800 physicians, 1,600 nurses and 2,800 support personnel.
The healthcare services sector has seen over 20 deals closed throughout Europe this year, with Palamon's June acquisition of Spanish Grupo SAR - estimated to be in excess of the EUR 200m mark -being the largest. The sector is especially prominent in geographies populated by small independent businesses that offer strong consolidation potential for buy-and-build specialists.
