UK - Accel and Index sell Playfish for up to $400m
Index Ventures and Accel Partners have wholly exited social gaming portfolio company Playfish via a trade sale to Electronic Arts for a consideration of up to $400m, including a $100m earnout.
London-based Playfish is a developer and publisher of games for social networks. The games are free, but players can buy or give virtual goods such as flowers, clothes, furnishings and weapons. To date, more than 150 million Playfish games have been installed and played by millions of people worldwide on platforms like Facebook, MySpace, Google, Bebo and iPhone. The company has development studios in London, San Francisco, Beijing and Norway.
In 2008, Accel and Index invested $17m in a series-B round of funding in the business. Accel also invested seed funding into the company.
