Carlyle MENA head quits over strategy row
Carlyle's head of the Middle East and Northern Africa has stepped down following a disagreement over regional strategy.
Managing director Walid Musallam, head of Carlyle MENA, and responsible for its $471m fund, which closed in 2007, has resigned from his position. Reports suggest the resignation follows disagreement over the closure of Carlyle's office in Egypt amidst political instability.
Musallam joined Carlyle in 2006 from his previous position as CEO for the Abu Dhabi Investment Company. Prior to that, he was CEO of Middle East Capital Group, and managing director of the US-based Infrastructure Finance Group.
He holds an MBA from Columbia University, an MS from Stanford, and a BS from the University of Pennsylvania.
Carlyle MENA is currently represented by offices in the United Arab Emirates and Turkey. It recently took a 48% stake in the Turkish Bahcesehir Koleji Education Group.
