UK - SWFs consider investment in Barclays
Several Sovereign Wealth Funds, among them Singapore's Temasek Holdings and the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), are considering backing a share issue by Barclays.
Barclays is thought to be seeking to raise more than £4bn from the issue and is aiming to offer a substantial stake to new investors, with existing shareholders also being given the opportunity to participate on similar terms.
Temasek and China Development Bank are both already shareholders in Barclays, having invested over £2.4bn in the bank in 2007 in a deal which saw Temasek take a 2% equity stake. An investment by QIA has been expected since Qatar's prime minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem al-Thani announced in January 2008 that US and Eurpoean banks were potential investment targets.
