EUROPE - Barclays boosts European mergers advisory business
Barclays plans to hire as many as 65 bankers for its European mergers advisory business in an attempt to become one of the top three global securities firms.
Investment banking unit Barclays Capital intends to add 30 to 40 bankers in Italy, Germany and France as well as between 15 to 25 in the UK. The additions are expected to build upon the bank's existing coverage of the Iberian region, Central and Eastern Europe and Asia.
The firm hopes to add approximately 300 people for European and Asian equities by the end of 2009.
Last week, Barclays named Mark Warham and Matthew Ponsonby co-heads of European M&A. Warham was most recently chairman of UK investment banking at Morgan Stanley, while Ponsonby joins from Citigroup, where he was global co-head of infrastructure investment banking.
Global head of mergers and acquisitions Paul Parker was cited as saying that 'M&A activity would pick up meaningfully in the fall' as markets begin to stabilise.
