UK - 3i et al. exit Velocix
3i, Amadeus Capital Partners and Pentech Ventures have exited their stake in P2P technology company Velocix via a trade sale to communications services business Alcatel-Lucent. No financial details were disclosed.
Cambridge-based Velocix is a global content delivery network (CDN) that enables safe and legitimate distribution of large digital assets such as video, software and games. The company was established in 2002 as CacheLogic, an internet consultancy business, which expanded into digital content delivery in response to demand created by the increasing proliferation of illegal file sharing. The Velocix network was launched in 2007, with the company officially re-branding in early 2008 in order to bring its corporate identity in line with its strategic direction. The business has offices in Cambridge, London, Madrid, Rome and New York.
The acquistion is expected to strengthen Alcatel-Lucent's portfolio of products and services, bringing a CDN infrastructure solution for internet service providers.
3i, Amadeus and Pentech first invested $20m into Velocix in July 2006. In 2008, the existing investors further backed the company in a fourth round of institutional funding worth $25m.
