Volume of buyout vs venture fund launches
In 2010, launches of venture funds surpassed buyout funds for the first time in 5 years, but the gap has narrowed in 2011.
During the early 2000s, i.e. the late dot-coms, venture capital funds saw a rise in activity, while buyout fund launches slumped. By 2005, this trend was reversed and buyout funds regained the upper hand. But since the onset of the financial crisis in late 2007, buyout fund launches have decreased and the fundraising environment suffered severely as lending conditions worsened.
Venture capital fund launches exceeded buyout funds in 2009 and saw another peak in 2010, when the industry trended towards pharma, tech and alternative energy. In 2011, the gap between venture and buyout funds narrowed again, leaving it to 2012 to decide whether venture's rise is over or not.
