Abraaj backs Yü-Ce Medical
Abraaj Group has acquired a stake in Yü-Ce Tıbbi Gereçler İthalat İhracat Mümessillik Sanayi ve Ticaret (Yü-Ce Medical), a Turkish manufacturer of disposable medical supplies.
The growth investment was made through Abraaj's Anatolia Growth Capital Fund, a 2014-vintage vehicle targeting $500m for investments in Turkey. It is also the first ever private equity investment made in the city of Şanlıurfa (Urfa), a city in south-eastern Turkey near the Euphrates river.
Yü-Ce Medical's founders, the Balçık family, will also invest alongside Abraaj and support the company's plans to increase production capacity and expand its sales and distribution network. The deal is expected to lead to improvements to Yü-Ce Medical's environmental, safety, social and governance practices.
With the investment in Yü-Ce, Abraaj completes its third investment this year, having acquired minority stakes in Turkish online retailer Hepsiburada and mattress manufacturer BRN (alongside the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development) in February.
Company
Founded in 1995, Yü-Ce Medical is a manufacturer of medical gauze, medical sponges and surgical sutures, headquartered in Şanlıurfa.
The company owns and operates two factories in Turkey, and supplies disposable medical supplies to 230 hospitals and 190 medical distributors across the country.
