The fifth Handelsblatt-Jahrestagung Private Equity conference took place at the Hilton Hotel in Frankfurt on 10 and 11 May 2005. The two-day event was attended by over 140 professionals, representing the private equity, M&A, advisor and banking sectors. The conference saw various topical issues being debated by leading figures from European private equity firms, starting with an overview of current projects in European private equity, which was led by Thomas Pütter (Allianz Capital Partners) and Georges Noël (EVCA). The topic that sparked the most debate was the recent accusation made by Franz Müntefering, chairman of Germany's ruling Social Democratic party, branding private equity groups as 'locusts'. This was discussed several times, and also attracted a large number of press.Further discussions were led by Professor Ann-Kristin Achleitner (Technische Universität München) and Berthold Bonanni (Dresdner Bank), as well as a large number of other speakers from firms including Triumph Adler, Egon Zehnder International, Debevoise & Plimpton, GI Ventures and gcp gamma capital partners. One seminar was held by Michael Joy of ETIMEX Primary Packaging GmbH, highlighting the issues faced for cooperation between financial investors and management teams. Discussions on the growing German capital market, tax and capital laws, as well as portfolio and risk management were key topics on the second day of the conference.
