Seventure et al. back Humedics' series-C
Seventure Partners and Vesalius Biocapital Partners have led a €6.3m series-C financing round for Berlin-based biotechnology firm Humedics.
The company's previous investors are also participating in the round.
Seventure Partners used its Health for Life Capital Fund, a €120m vehicle which held its first close on €62m in January this year.
According to the company, 100 million people suffer from liver diseases worldwide. These include liver cirrhosis, hepatitis, fatty liver, metabolic disorders and liver tumours.
Previous funding
High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF) invested €500,000 in Humedics in March 2010. Peppermint Venture Partners, IBB-Beteiligungen, KfW, HTGF and Ventegis Capital injected further growth capital into the company in October 2011.
Peppermint invested via its Charite Biomedical Fund, while IB used its €52m VC Fonds Technologie Berlin. KfW drew capital from its ERP Startfonds, a €730m vehicle.
Company
Humedics span out of the Freie Universität Berlin and the Charité University Hospital in 2009. It has developed the breath-test-based diagnostic system LiMAx, which consists of a medical device, breathing masks and a diagnostic drug.
The company claims its test provides quick results on a patient's liver function capacity. Doctors can then choose treatments based on individual patients' liver status. The test is currently used to assess liver function before and after liver transplants, to plan for liver surgery and to check for diseases. It has been used 12,500 times in clinical practice and it is currently undergoing a phase-III clinical trial. It has around 10 employees.
People
Erwin de Buijzer is the managing director of Humedics. Christian Schneider, managing partner at Vesalius and Robert Schier of Seventure took seats on the Humedics board, alongside Klaus Stöckemann of Peppermint VenturePartners, Ute Mercker of IBB Beteiligungsgesellschaft and Volker Pfahlert of Numares Group.
